This appeared as a letter-to-the-editor in the Asheville Citizen-Times on (or around) June 10, 2017:
President Trump’s decision to withdraw the U.S.
from the Paris climate agreement can be summarized in a word: immoral. The affirmation
and praise of the President’s actions by some of our Republican leaders is also
immoral, allowing our future and the future of our children to be co-opted by
the Charles Murrays and the David and Charles Kochs of the world—wealthy fossil
fuel magnates who’ll do anything to cling to the dirty, polluting practices of
yesterday. The rest of the world—including China, India, the European Union,
and even Nicaragua—is working diligently to transition to a cleaner, more
stable climate and environment, developing new industries and well-paying jobs
along the way. However, the United States, which has produced nearly a third of
the world’s planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions with only 4% of the world’s
population, remains hostage to a handful of men (yes, men) who want us to
believe that everything will work out if we just stick to our dirty old ways of
creating energy. Don’t be fooled that this decision is about an unfair
agreement tilted against the United States; this is about re-election bids and
greed, the opposite of leadership. Sad…and immoral.
